World Oceans Day 2021

"One Ocean, One Climate, One Future - Together"

To mark World Oceans Day 2021, P.E Nation is excited to announce our partnership with Seabin Project through i=Change, to support the incredible work they have done and continue to do in cleaning up our planet's oceans and waterways.

With the theme of this year's World Oceans Day being "One Ocean, One Climate, One Future - Together", our new partnership with Seabin Project through i=Change means we all get to play a part in protecting the environment.

Seabin Project

Seabin Project is an Australian initiative launched in 2015 by boat builders Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski. Both passionate about the ocean and finding a solution to plastic pollution affecting marine life around the globe, the co-founders developed a device that attaches to a water pump to collect floating debris, with a mesh lining fine enough to gather microfibres and plastics.

To date, there are 860 Seabins now positioned around the globe, across 53 countries, capturing 3,612.8kg of manmade debris every day. Each Seabin has the capability to catch a total of 90,000 plastic bags; 35,700 disposable cups; 16,500 plastic bottles; or 166,500 plastic utensils per year. Since launching in 2015, the company estimates it has helped to remove almost 2 million kilos of waste from our oceans, marinas and waterways.

Better for People and Planet

In Sydney alone, Seabin began running a pilot project around Sydney harbour less than 12 months ago. Since July 2020, 1.36 million kilos of marine litter have been captured, with the help of 40 volunteers working to maintain and clear the Seabins positioned around the city's waterways, as well as record the amount of waste collected; the latter piece being crucial to understanding the overall plastic problem and how it can be improved upon.

“Data is critical,” says Pete. “The Seabin technology itself is just one element of our work. We need better education and prevention strategies in place to ensure garbage doesn’t end up in the ocean in the first place. As we process the data we collect, we can forecast behaviours.”

When you shop at pe-nation.com, $1 of every purchase is donated to charities and environmental programs, including Seabin, through i=Change, giving all of us the power to help shape our tomorrow.

Each small donation leads to greater collective impact. "One small action replicated by many brings change," says Pete. "That one small action may feel insignificant, but it makes a difference to something or someone. 'It's just one straw,' but think what would happen if two billion people said so."

With every $1 you choose to donate through i=Change at the P.E Nation checkout, Seabin Project can remove 1.2kg of plastic and debris from the sea. Learn more about Seabin Project here.
