CELEBRATING EARTH DAY 2024: OUR COMMITMENT

HOME  / NEW ARRIVALS  / BLOG

"If we human beings learn to see the intricacies that bind one part of a natural system to another and then to us, we will no longer argue about the importance of wilderness protection, or over the question of saving endangered species, or how human communities must base their economic futures - not on short-term exploitation - but on long-term, sustainable development."

Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day

EARTH DAY 2024: PLANET VS PLASTICS

To understand the 'why' of Earth Day, we have to go back 55 years, to January 28 1969: an oil well blowout off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, caused an estimated 3 million gallons of crude oil to spill into the surrounding waters, resulting in widespread ecological damage. Deeply moved by his visit to the site and the environmental fallout he witnessed there, Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin senator and conservationist, pledged to create a public movement that would connect and unite people in proactively supporting protection of the planet.

Without wasting time, Nelson teamed up with congressman Pete McCloskey and student activist Dennis Hayes, to plan the date for what they hoped would prove a nationwide rally. They chose Wednesday April 22, 1970 - which fell between Spring Break and final exams - in order to maximize the numbers that might show up. The strategy worked, and an estimated 20 million people in cities across the USA came out to support the call for environmental reform.

Their efforts are considered the birth of the modern environmental movement. Observed on April 22 every year since, Earth Day is a global phenomenon that unites us worldwide in addressing climate change and the challenges we collectively face.

This year's Earth Day theme, "Planet vs Plastics," resonates deeply with P.E Nation's values and mission. As a certified B Corp, we are committed to our journey toward a better, more sustainable way of life for all.

While we're proud to be recognised as part of a global movement channelling business as a force for good, we also know we haven’t crossed a finish line. When it comes to protecting and preserving our one and only home, there is no end point.

What we can do is continue to learn, improve and commit to doing what we can. We got here as a team, and continue to be on a path of understanding and improvement, through considered product, packaging and business practices.

SUSTAINABILITY EDIT: CHOOSING ECO-FRIENDLY FABRICS

The theme for Earth Day 2024, "Planet vs Plastics," brings home our collective responsibility to combat plastic pollution and choose sustainable alternatives. At P.E Nation, we recognize the detrimental impact of plastic pollution and the significant threat it poses to marine life, delicate ecosystems, and our health, and are dedicated to taking steps to reduce our plastic footprint.

Through our Sustainability Edit, we prioritize the use of eco-friendly materials, such as recycled polyester and recycled nylon across our signature fabrications and collections - including leggings, sports bras, T-shirts and tanks, outerwear and snow apparel - to minimize plastic waste and contribute to a cleaner planet.

Organic cotton also takes pride of place within our collections. With a soft feel and premium, long-lasting quality, you'll find organic cotton tees, hoodies, sweats and sweatpants for a feelgood addition to your wardrobe.

EMBRACING SUSTAINABLE FASHION FOR A BETTER FUTURE

Sustainability is more than just a trend; it's a core value woven into the fabric of our daily practices. Together, we can make a positive impact and ensure a healthier planet for generations to come. In the words of Nelson, "The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard."

There is always more we can do. And we achieve more when we do it together. We're so thankful you're on this journey with us.

This Way Forward.
